Let Your Light Shine Day 3

The LORD is my light and my salvation;

Whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid?

What is light? That is a question of great magnitude! In its simplest scientific definition, light is “electromagnetic radiation”. The encyclopedia Britannica attempts a brief definition below:

“No single answer to the question “What is light?” satisfies the many contexts in which light is experienced, explored, and exploited. The physicist is interested in the physical properties of light, the artist in an aesthetic appreciation of the visual world. Through the sense of sight, light is a primary tool for perceiving the world and communicating within it. Light from the Sun warms the Earth, drives global weather patterns, and initiates the life-sustaining process of photosynthesis. On the grandest scale, light’s interactions with matter have helped shape the structure of the universe. Indeed, light provides a window on the universe, from cosmological to atomic scales.”

The Bible clearly states in several places that God is light. The most profound statement of this is in the Epistle of John, “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). God is light, and light is the foundation of the universe, based on the definition above. God is the universe! Therefore, when we experience the energy of light in and around us, we are experiencing the Divine nature of God.

What does it mean then to say that something or someone is our “light”? The famous Debbie Boone song proclaims that the one she loves can “light up my life.” In my opinion, it means that the light is filling us up with the energy of life, as in the “spark” of life. Therefore, when the Psalm says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear?” it quite literally means the divine life energy of God (“light”) is my being. That is powerful! If we really believe that the Divine light of God is us, then of course we have the courage to say, “of whom shall I fear”!

In trying times like these it is very important to remember who we are and whose we are. The Apostle Peter wrote, “he [God in Christ Jesus] has bestowed on us the precious and very great promises, so that through them you may come to share in the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). We have a spark of the divine nature of God living in us, if we believe we are children of God. With faith in this truth, we can have the Lord be the light shining forth from us. When we embrace this Divine light, we can truly shake off the fear that is so prevalent in society now.

Today, I intend to meditate on the great promise that, “God is my light and my salvation. God is my life’s refuge.” Please join me in praying today:

“Holy Spirit, thank you for creating and filling this planet with the divine light energy of God. Thank you that God’s light created, and now sustains all that we see in this life. Fill us with the power of God’s light, so that we can be healthy and strong in all circumstances. Amen.”
